Malignant mesothelioma is caused by asbestos exposure, which is a toxic material that was used in many construction and automotive products. Around 3,000 people in the U.S. are diagnosed with mesothelioma every year.

Due to the latency of the disease, about 20-50 years, the majority of mesothelioma patients are diagnosed in their 60s. Treatment during the early stages of the disease offers the best chance of survival.

Pleural mesothelioma is the most common form of the disease, accounting for about 75% of cases. This develops in the pleura, the two layers of tissue that surround and protect the lungs. Those who have worked with asbestos products in fields such as construction, machinists, veterans, and others, are most at risk.

Once this cancer develops, it does spread quickly. Which is why it’s imperative to know who is at risk. The first symptoms of the cancer arise after tumors have progressed into advanced development. While surgery is considered the best treatment to improve prognosis, it’s not the only option. Patients can choose other life-extending treatments such as chemotherapy, radiation therapy, immunotherapy, gene therapy, and photodynamic therapy. There is no cure for mesothelioma, however thanks to advances in treatment technologies, many patients can live a long time with the cancer.

The Mesothelioma Network has put together a list of treatments, and doctors available for patients: https://www.mesotheliomaprognosis.com/doctors/treatment-centers/. Our patient advocates are also available 24/7 to answer questions, provide guidance, and be of support to patients and their families.

If you or someone you know is struggling, please don’t hesitate to reach out to their dedicated team today.
